Before you setup any voice commands you should create all of the macros and add any other buttons you want - you will be selecting buttons from your remotes to use with a phrase.

The app will walk you through setup and the last step will be selecting phrases and linking them to buttons on remotes.  You will choose a PHRASE for your voice command from the provided options and then select a button from a remote that this phrase will trigger.  You can add as many buttons as you want.  You cannot use the same PHRASE more than once.

To initiate a button press via Alexa you can say any of the below:

  • "Alexa, ask Blumoo to PUSH _________"
  • "Alexa, ask Blumoo to PRESS _________"
  • "Alexa, ask Blumoo to TAP _________"
  • "Alexa, ask Blumoo to HIT _________"
  • "Alexa, ask Blumoo to TURN _________"
  • "Alexa, ask Blumoo to TURN ON _________"
  • "Alexa, ask Blumoo to TURN OFF _________"
  • "Alexa, ask Blumoo to PLAY _________"
  • "Alexa, ask Blumoo to WATCH _________"
  • "Alexa, ask Blumoo to LISTEN _________"
  • "Alexa, ask Blumoo to TRIGGER _________"

To make voice control more natural you can choose the POWER TOGGLE button for your TV and choose the PHRASE "TV" - this allows you to say "Alexa, ask Blumoo to turn on the TV" and "Alexa, ask Blumoo to turn off the TV".

We setup button presses this way to ensure the best experience based on how Alexa works.  We first tested letting people name buttons but ran into two big issues:
1. People name buttons things Alexa doesn't understand
2. Alexa doesn't do well with translating free speech, she does much better when comparing to defined values
